Watching the US men’s national team get utterly destroyed by Belgium in a round of sixteen World Cup match last Monday prompted an internal dialogue about some aspects of life never really change regardless of the amount of time money and effort involved. The US has a population of 350 million to draw from, yet was thrashed by a country of 12 million. And Belgium is no longer the team it once was.
There are many reasons for this lack of progress for US soccer: lack of focus on the game because of the wide variety of sporting options available to our kids, our MLS is among the worst of all the national leagues, and finally the path to success lies in the very expensive club travel system.
So we will continue to be beaten by the same elite nations who are in the middle of World Cup contention every time. Elite players from blue blood soccer powerhouses whose reigns will likely last forever.
How does this relate to tune tourneys?
