Q95 - This Might Be It

Description

Last Sunday, we had a flight out of Florida booked for 8 pm. The forecast predicted a large storm would hit New England starting around 10 pm. Both my brother’s and sister’s families had already had their flights canceled or rescheduled several days out (they're still in Florida as of this writing). Staying for several more days would be financially difficult, detrimental to our small business, burdensome on our pet sitter, and a strain on my unhealthy attachment to my rabbits. Also, my wife was under the weather and needed to get home. I held out hope that, because we were on a cheaper, sketchier airline and flying into Manchester rather than Boston, we would still be a go. That morning, our insane Department of Homeland Security suspended TSA PreCheck, which triggered alerts, only to reverse the decision a few hours later. But the damage was done, and that day's already beleaguered flight schedules were shitmixed. We got to the airport early as advised. The board was full of delays and cancellations, but our flight was still there, now departing at 9:40 pm with an arrival time around midnight, well into the storm.

Long story longer, after further delays, we boarded. We then sat on the plane for an hour, just letting that New England snow accumulate without explanation. Word spread through the aircraft that we were waiting for a pilot. Finally, a pilot boarded and seemed to switch with another guy, which supported my unsubstantiated theory that they were swapping out a coward for an experienced snow jockey. Anyway, after another tense few minutes, the plane backed away from the gangway, lingered a little longer just to add more tension, then finally taxied to the runway and took off. The flight was relatively easy until we started our descent. What does this have to do with music tournaments? Nothing! But I typed it out, so I'm not going to delete all that for no reason.
