The recent theatrical release of Spinal Tap 2-The End Continues got me thinking about the perspective the band brought to the business of creating, marketing, and producing a band. Maybe too much perspective
Soldiering on despite ego clashes, malfunctioning gear,interference from outsiders, inept management, and lackluster promotion, the band managed to maintain the most important part of the equation: the love of the music.
Despite a Stonehenge monument that was in danger of being trampled by dwarves, the band leaned into the music and pushed through because, after all, it’s about the music. That’s why we’re all happily ensconced in this tournament; we love the music.
So when Nigel Tufnel puts down his guitar and takes to the piano for a short piece played for the director it was especially striking.
Nigel wrote the pithy, pretty piece entitled “lick my love pump” in what he stated was the saddest of all keys: D minor.
The goal of this tournament is to present the best possible song collection in this saddest of all keys. I’ll take all comers as long as they’re in the key of d minor. Let’s see if Nigel is right!
