It’s the season that brings shorter days and longer nights. Nights that manifest horrors and frights. Remember the feeling of tension churning your viscera when you’re watching a terrifying movie. For me there is something extra uncomfortable about material that immerses you in secret knowledge and the unknown places that it can take your mind.
This theme aims squarely at music that may take you out of your comfort zone and into a deeper, darker place. It could be either the lyrics or the music or both that embody the theme. Think Sabbath riffing on the root and flatted 5th on their eponymous debut cut; an interval banned by the church for years as the “devil’s interval.” There are only two conditions: I’d like you to provide one cut from the 80’s or earlier. Secondly, one cut from any Norse black metal band or solo artist. Just a peccadillo of mine after reading “Lords of Chaos.” It was like satanic cheesecake.
